Union team rallies to dominate
GRUFC claimed a 34-5 win and bonus point over competition cellar dweller Frenchville on Friday night but the team still has a ways to go to match it with the title favourites.
Frenchville claimed first points in a hard-fought opening 20-minute period before Gladstone rallied to dominate the remainder of the fixture.
Despite the convincing score line GRUFC president Sam Carey said the side must lift to mix it with the likes of competition benchmark Colts.
“We were happy to get the win and the bonus point but at the end of the day if they played like that against the top teams it wouldn't be good enough,” he said.
“They're still not performing at the level they need to be performing to really take on the top-tier teams.”
Jeremy Hastings, Robert Wood and Jeff Milburn were amongst the tries for Gladstone in a match that saw the Goats get away with several strategic errors.
“From the sideline it was evident that there was some frustration; they're not being patient when they need to be and making some poor tactical decisions like not taking easy points when they're on offer,” Carey said.
“It's those little things that you can get punished for quite badly by the top teams.”
Next game is against Blackwater at Rugby Park in two weeks.
