Union targeting LNP over jobless in regional Queensland

The state's unions are taking aim at government MPs in "their own backyards", using government figures to break down unemployment rates to electorates.

The Queensland Council of Unions has used the federal government's 'Small Area Labour Market' figures for the year to June 2014 to detail "a cloud of unemployment descending on regional and metropolitan Queensland".

Unemployment has become an issue for the entire nation, with the majority of states struggling to keep their jobless rates down.  The Queensland government has been at pains to point out the state's gas projects are transitioning from the construction to production phases, which has seen jobs shed, and poor global coal prices have delayed the state's next resource boom.

It is hoping projects in the Galilee Basin begin preliminary works early next year, to help turn the economy around. It is also relying on asset sales providing it with an infrastructure funding pool, to help kick-start construction projects in regional areas.

But QCU president John Battams, who is part of the union coalition against asset sales, said the government's plan would lead to more job losses.
