Ului to hit coast at weekend

CYCLONE Ului was positioned about 1300km northeast of Gladstone yesterday afternoon and is expected to hit the Central or Capricornia coast at the weekend.

The cyclone is moving southwest at about 4kmh and remains offshore, but will move towards the coast come Friday, forecasters say.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Pradeep Singh said it was very likely the cyclone would hit after Saturday night.

“We’re not sure of the exact location at this stage but it should become clearer as the weekend approaches,” he said.

Gladstone Regional Council is taking precautionary measures with specialist equipment being prepared to help clean up should the cyclone hit.

Mayor George Creed said Council was urging residents to “not be too complacent”, and take the necessary precautionary measures now in the face of the cyclone.

The Local Disaster Management Group will meet at 9am today to formally discuss the threat.
