TWO people have died following a tragic two-vehicle smash on the intersection of Elliott Heads Rd and Hummock Rd around 6am this morning.

Queensland Ambulance Service Senior Operations Supervisor Martin Kelly said a female person driving a small SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, while a man in a ute was found in a "gravely ill" condition and died at the scene.

"Despite best efforts we were unable to extricate the deceased," Mr Kelly said.

"By the time I arrived 15 minutes after the accident happened, the person was gravely ill.

"It's just a terrible tragedy."

Bundaberg Police said the man was aged in his mid-40s and the woman was in her early 30s.

Power had to be cut at the crash scene so that emergency crews could work safely because an electricity pole was smashed in half where the wrecks of the two cars lay.

"It's quite a different scene, quite a dangerous scene," Mr Kelly said.

Mr Kelly said both drivers were local to the area.

"Some family members came across the accident," he said.

"It is very tragic.

"Every time there is an accident, there's an unbelievable effect on their family."

Mr Kelly said he was unable to speculate on the cause of the crash.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to contact Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
