Turtle lays eggs on tourist strip beach

MORE than 40 people were on Mooloolaba Beach last night watching a turtle lay her eggs.

The Loggerhead turtle chose the tourist hub to lay more than 100 eggs - but it was not easy.

Ilkley's Tony Moore, who was on the beach with his family, took photos of the rare event before settling down to watch. He said the turtle came up on to the beach about 6.30pm, and was still there at 9pm.

Mr Moore, with wife Rebecca and two of his four children - eight-year-old Summer and Benaton, 10 - had been down at the beach to cool off after the hot day. He said the turtle, disturbed by flashes as onlookers took photographs, was digging her fifth hole when they left.

"We were told by a turtle care council officer that she would lay on the beach eventually," he said.

"When  the Turtlecare lady arrived she commented that the crowd was doing exactly what they should and congratulated them. The authorities seemed pretty happy with everything,' Rebecca told the Daily.

There were 124 eggs laid.

Kate Winter from the council - 'the crowd followed the instructions of the Turtlecare volunteers (Lesley and Michael) perfectly, and we ended up with a great result, a assisted lay, for a turtle that otherwise would not have been able to lay.

It was a great experience for everyone and especially for the kids.'
