Turning Japanese for talented rising Meteor star Tegan

SOCCER: Tegan Van Vegchel will be have an experience of a lifetime when she jets off overseas for the Queensland Under 15 Select Football Tour in Tokyo, Japan.

The Meteors starlet tells of how she felt immediately after finding out that she was the only athlete from Gladstone who will have the Asian soccer experience which commences on September 17 when the Queensland side will do a training session with J-League club Kashima Antlers.

"I found out on the day of the preliminary finals when mum (Jean Van Vegchel) got the call from coach Martin Fehlberg ,” Tegan said.

"She got excited and then I got excited.

"It feels really cool to be noticed a lot lately and it has been fun.”

Among the criteria she was picked for was her ability to play in all positions on the pitch.

Queensland's first match is against Omitama FA on day three on September 18 and that game will be followed by another against Zasupa Kusatsu.

Tegan will play a total of four games with two of those on day's five and six against Narita International School and Kashima Junior High respectively.

The youngster will have the perfect preparation ahead of Japan because she and her mum Jean will both play in the women's grand final against Meteorites on Saturday from 5pm.

Unfortunately a third family member won't be able to play due to injury.

"My daughter Madeline unfortunately won't be playing as she is waiting on a knee reconstruction, but she is part of the family and has played for three quarters of the season,” Van Vegchel said.

The mum added the trip to Japan would never be made possible without financial and moral support.

"Tegan has received great financial support from the annual Terry West Carnival and also through many family and friends,” Van Vegchel said.

"This is her first big trip and is hoping that there are many more to come over the next few years.”

Meanwhile see Saturday's Gladstone Observer for an extensive preview of all senior and junior soccer grand finals.
