Turkish man found after deserting ship in Gladstone

A TURKISH national has been caught and detained while travelling to Brisbane after jumping ship in Gladstone.

The man was a crew member on a commercial ship docked in Gladstone and failed to return to his ship after shore leave on Wednesday.

The man had boarded a passenger bus headed to Brisbane.

A representative for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection said the Australian Border Force and Queensland Police responded swiftly to the apparent desertion and the man was detained on Thursday in Bundaberg.

"The man is currently being interviewed by the ABF," the representative said.

"His maritime crew visa has been cancelled and it is likely the man will be removed from Australia as soon as possible."

The last person to desert a ship in Gladstone was a Chinese national.
