Meet a local Gladstone band: Octopus
Name: Kelvin Sweeney.
How many people are in the band? Kelvin Sweeney on guitar, vocals, Darren Woodman, on bass and vocals and Jason Bucholz on the drums.
When was the band formed? Darren and I formed the band four years ago and have had several drummers since then, they are hard to keep.
What genre of music do you play? Our music varies through the 90s to now, but mainly we focus on up tempo rock.
We feel that the blues, rock and punk feeling will never go away.
Favourite gig? The best gig was 2013 at the Agnes Tavern without a doubt.
It was on New Years and it was great because it was a packed house, with a great response, I even had a punter wiping sweat off my brow! Pity it was a bloke!
What do you like most about being in a band? The reason we play gigs is to get out for a start, meet people, and we get a kick out of people coming up to us and saying, 'you guys are great'.
We put on a high energy show that leaves us puffed at the end of the set.
We don't perform at half energy and that's why I need a fan blowing up front, it's like doing a workout at the gym.
How did the band members meet? Darren and I met four years ago at the Jam Happening sessions.
I fell sick with anxiety and Darren waited for me to recover. We have a great harmony sound so he must have thought I was worth waiting for.
Jason has been with the band for six months, he was mixing bands all around Australia with stage and audio.
He's spent at least 20 years mixing at the Gladstone theatre. Now he's on the other side of the stage and is a great muso to have on stage if something goes wrong.
What are your favourite songs to play? Make me smile by Mick Barker and The Reptiles, Second Solution by the Living End, Bow River by Cold Chisel and Blue Sky Mining by Midnight Oil just to name a few.
When is your next gig? This Saturday night at the Agnes Water Tavern.
