Staff face sickening Wake Up call as 150 jobs go at Ten

NETWORK Ten staff face a sickening wait as company chiefs prepare to cut 150 jobs from the news division.

While it's been confirmed three national bulletins and failed breakfast show Wake Up will go, APN Newsdesk understands voluntary redundancies will be offered before final decisions are made.

A source from within the network said this afternoon staff were only made aware of the looming cuts on Monday when they read the morning papers.

Describing the atmosphere as "absolutely horrible", the source said it was a "sad day for the network"  which cut 100 jobs from the news division less than two years ago.

"We knew it wasn't good but we did not expect this," the source said

"The fact that other news organisations knew before we did is appalling but I guess it's the nature of what we do."

Public sector union National President Michael Tull told Fairfax management should not have allowed staff to hear about the cuts in the media and "whatever they've got to say, they need to say it to their employees and say it now".

All state-based bulletins are believed to be safe, with the majority set to be produced from a central hub in Sydney.
