QAL worker loves home but travel is a passion

HE'S lived here his whole life and wouldn't change a thing.

Russell Stewart, 24, said as much as he loves Gladstone, his passion is travel.

"I've actually just gotten back from a road trip down to the Gold Coast," he said.

"It was mum's 50th birthday so we went hot air ballooning in the hinterland.

"The only catch is the 4am wake-up call."

When Mr Stewart isn't road tripping, he's a frequent flyer.

"I've travelled to Europe three times, spent a month in China and have done a cruise to Vanuatu," he said.

"Germany would have to be my favourite place though, because I'm a beer connoisseur. There's been no more Tooheys New for me since then."

Sampling exotic foods is another of Russell's hobbies.

"I love Japanese and Chinese food, and I've just experience teppanyaki restaurants," he said.

Since leaving State High, Russell has been working at QAL as an electrical technician and said he loved the work.

"I've been there for seven years now, and believe it or not, I've got long service leave now, and I'm only 24," he laughed.

"Most of my friends are just getting their first job, and I've been doing it for ages.

"My job's really flexible too, which is great because with my travel my boss lets me work weekends to make up for my road trip days."

When Russell's not working, renovating his old Queenslander is a favourite pastime.

"I've been working on my house now for four years and I actually really enjoy renovating," he said.

"Watching The Block gives me some hot tips, but some things I just cringe at.

"Other than that, fishing with the old man is what my weekends are filled with."

Russell's parents and grandparents all lived in Gladstone, and it's only his sister who lives out of town.

"I visited my sister recently in Brisbane, which is a fun getaway," he said.

"She's got a little girl, Bella, who I take care of, but the beauty is I can give her back anytime."

The next big trip for Russell is a road trip through the UK in June.
