Tannum Sands SLSC imparts life skills to youngsters
JUNIOR activity chairman Chris Skerman welcomes more nippers to the Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club.
He said the volunteer-based club trained youngsters from under-8 to cadet.
"We have 145 juniors but are always looking for more because it is important to develop them," Skerman said.
Nipper Sundays are a popular training base, with 100 children learning the basics of surf lifesaving.
"I just love seeing them learning life skills and in a teamwork situation that can be applied anywhere," Skerman said.
"The common thing about these kids is that they are all very fit."
In his third year at the helm, Skerman said the nipper stage helps develop, and is a stepping stone to, competitive surf lifesaving.
"There is a real community feel and am really proud of what the club has achieved," Skerman added.
The nippers meet at the TSSLSC on Sundays from 9am to 11am, but Skerman said training sessions were available seven days a week.
