A 71-year-old man on his way home from work at 6am Saturday was found dead in his car after it crashed through a fence and into a neighbour's backyard.

The deceased traffic controller was parking at the Franmaur St boarding house in Sun Valley where he lived, when his car accelerated forward through a fence and down a 3m embankment.

The owner of the boarding house said the man had lived there for only two months and was in a position where he had to continue to work, at his age.

"It's really sad because he was a really nice bloke," he said.

"To be 71, having to work and then dying with his work boots on."

He said he thought the man must have died before his car crashed down the bank.

Tyre marks could be seen on the driveway and scrapes along a tree at the top of the embankment.

A neighbour who lives on Attunga St heard the crash and ran out to see what the noise was.

"I turned, saw the car and it was still revving," she said. "It was nose first into the ground and just hanging.

"When the coroner took his body away I said a little prayer for him and realised I didn't even know his name."

The man's wife is believed to be in England. Last night police still had not been able to notify her of his death.
