Towns declared disaster zones

THEODORE, in the Central Highlands has officially been declared a disaster zone by the State Government.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts yesterday morning declared a disaster situation for the flood-affected townships of Chinchilla, Dalby and Theodore where emergency evacuations are taking place.

The declaration, made at 12:45am Tuesday, also includes the towns of Alpha, Jericho and Warra where it is anticipated that many residents may soon need to be evacuated in response to the unfolding flood emergency.

“The declaration in parts of Gladstone, Western Downs and Longreach regional councils gives emergency services agencies and police the power of mandatory evacuations if required,” he said.

“Evacuations are currently under way in Theodore, with five aircraft chartered to perform evacuations for up to 300 people.”

Hospital patients have already been relocated to the RSL Hall as water levels increase.
