Tourism in Queensland set to go through a boom

QUEENSLAND is on the cusp of a massive boom in tourism with new investments on the table, including major refurbishments of Hayman Island and Whisper Bay Apartments in the Whitsundays and the resurrection of the former Laguna Quays resort near Proserpine.

There is also burgeoning interest from tourists from the UAE, China and Japan.

That's the message Premier Campbell Newman has brought back from a trade mission to key export partners and investment hubs.

"We were able to make significant progress in our discussions with investors, and there was optimism among the delegates of an unprecedented period of growth in Queensland's tourism industry," Mr Newman said.

Kerzner International, operators of Dubai's world famous Atlantis the Palm, have secured the management rights for Hayman Island and will be spending $40 million to refurbish it.

Kerzner International is the developer of the "One&Only" chain of luxury resorts, which are up there with the most exclusive resorts anywhere in the world.

Fullshare Developments is planning to refurbish its Whisper Bay Apartments in the Whitsundays and Fullshare Laguna Resort.

"These proposals from Kerzner International and Fullshare Group could not have come at a better time," Mr Newman said.

"My government has prioritised tourism as one of Queensland's four economic pillars and the international market has responded.

"Indeed, this proposed development is recognition of how quickly the tourism industry has matured under the Newman Government, and the esteem with which the spectacular Hayman Island is regarded internationally.

"The developments would create jobs during the construction phase of the project, not to mention the ongoing operational jobs that would follow. I welcome the proposals and will be taking a personal interest in how these projects develop."
