Gladstone squad battle ready for home derby bout

PURPLE-clad women whizzing around on skates and knocking each other over, live music and a bar, it doesn't get much better than the Gladstone Roller Derby.

Tomorrow night will see two bouts with Yeppoon Roller Derby to take on Rocky Roller Derby from 5pm and Gladstone's Hustlers to battle Paradise City from 7pm at the Gladstone PCYC.

Hustlers player Lainey McPhee said the best part about roller derby is the speed.

"I like it because it's not a run of the mill sport. It allows you to release your energy and have fun when doing it," she said. "Roller derby is exercise but it doesn't feel like exercise.

"It's a rough and tumble sport. It's all in fun and doesn't get too serious. If we get knocked over we just have a laugh," she said.

Ms McPhee says she is expecting more than 200 spectators to watch the battles.

"There'll be a live band on the night, there'll be a bar operating and cold food available, all run by the PCYC."

The objectives of roller derby are simple.

Each team fields a single point scoring skater, a Jammer, whose object is to lap as many opposing skaters as they can.

Tickets for adults are $15 and children $5.

Rules of the game

  • There are two 30 minute halves
  • The team with the most points wins
  • You're allowed to push people
  • The team with the most points wins
