Four horrific crimes that changed Gladstone

NEARING the end of a 14-year prison sentence for helping her husband abduct and rape a 10-year old girl in Gladstone, the Attorney-General has filed an application to block the release of Jan-Maree Farrenkothen into the community.

Gladstone woman Jan-Maree Farrenkothen, who has taken on her maiden name of Dunlop, has spent the last 14 years behind bars for the crime.

Her case will come before the court in April.

As the community reacts to that, The Observer takes a look back at some of Gladstone's most horrific, sadistic and mortifying crimes which will never be forgotten.

Kathryn Daley, 2008

RAIL workers found the body of 21-year-old Kathryn Daley at Callemondah, just north of Gladstone in February, 2008.

Police said at the time the popular Gladstone woman's body had suffered severe trauma.

Grant Westley Meredith was handed a life sentence in 2011 for the brutal murder.

During the trial, Crown Prosecutor Brendan Campbell said he bound Ms Daley's hands, raped her, then slit her throat.

Kat and her friends went to the Players International Nightclub for a night of fun, leaving at 4am.

She was going to meet her friends at the Mobil 24-hour service station, but she never arrived at her destination.

Victims identity protected, 2002

JAN-Maree Farrenkothen and her former husband Jurgen "Terry" Farrenkothen lured a 10-year-old girl, who had been at their house playing with their son, upstairs where she was handcuffed, gagged and raped by her husband.

Nearing the end of a 14-year prison sentence, Ms Farrenkothen (who now goes by her maiden name of Dunlop) is now seeking freedom.

But the Attorney-General has filed an application to block the release of 55 year old Dunlop into the community.

It is understood the victim had been over at the Farrenkothen's house playing with their 11-year old son in the backyard when she was lured upstairs by Dunlop to play computer games.

Farrenkothen threatened to break the girl's neck after she complained the handcuffs were on too tight and forced the girl to perform oral sex on him.

The girl was then given a drug called Mersyndol which was meant to relax her before Farrenkothen tried to have sex with her.

Dunlop held the victim down and gagged her with a pillow while Farrenkothen raped her.

At 6pm the victim's mother, who lived only 200 metres away, started looking for her daughter.

Roxane Gilbert, 2012

HORACE Lorenzo Lyken Jones pleaded guilty to using a samurai sword to brutally murder his own mother in 2012.

The Gladstone man was aged just 19 when his mother's body was found with stab wounds and wrapped in a blue tarpaulin.

Prosecutor Todd Fuller said the mum and son had trouble getting on

Prosecutor Todd Fuller said Ms Gilbert, who was also known as Roxane Jones, had fallen out with her eldest son because of her "erratic behaviour and lifestyle choices".

But the court heard that Mr Jones lost it on June 29, 2012, when Ms Gilbert hung up the phone on one of Jones' friends who called the house.

As Ms Gilbert, 38, sat on the couch, Jones allegedly struck her in the head with the ornamental sword, which was on display in his bedroom.

As she stood up he allegedly slashed her neck, before slitting her throat when she fell to the ground, pleading for him to stop.

Mima McKim-Hill, 1967

IN 1967, 21-year-old Mima McKim mysteriously disappeared when she left Calliope for her job at the local electricity board.

Ms McKim's car was found on the Gladstone bypass near Bernaraby in the early hours of the morning the following day.

Her body, which showed signs of being raped and bashed, was found 16 days later in a waterhole at Collard Creek.

The creek is 80km from where her car was found.

Her killer has never been caught.

There were reports of a Ford Customline driving in the area with four men in it.

But the lead came to nothing.
