Top CrossFit athlete in Gladstone to inspire
AMANDA Allen is one of the world's top CrossFit athletes, and she is on her way to Gladstone.
Allen will be making the trip today and will be at Tannum Sands and Gladstone CrossFit centres this afternoon.
She will be putting on a training session with a couple of lucky athletes from the area before staying in central Queensland for a competition in Rockhampton on Saturday and Sunday.
"She is the fourth fittest female in Australia," one of the organisers who helped get Allen to town, Jeff Zawila, said.
"The incredible thing is that she is twice the age of anyone she competes with."
At 44, the local athletes are expecting Allen to bring a lot of enthusiasm to the gyms.
Owner Sean O'Neill thinks a visit from someone as high profile as Allen will raise the sport's standing in the Gladstone community.
"We are excited to see how the community embraces her and how it impacts the sport in our area as well," he said.
Perhaps the person most excited about Allen's visit though is Emma Zawila, who has been gearing up to meet the legend for a month.
A day and a half ago Emma, 16, found out she would get to train with Allen, and has not been able to cage her energy since.
"It is unbelievable that I get the opportunity to train with an athlete like her," Emma said.
"I was so shocked to find out. "It is crazy."
But Jeff Zawila is hopeful this will be just the start of high-profile athletes visiting the region.
His aim is to have a host of athletes like Allen come and enhance the sport.
First though, he will get the travelling to and from Rockhampton Airport out of the way, as well as make sure the visit goes well.
"We are having a mini-event at Gladstone," he said.
"Anyone can come and watch there and Tannum Sands - the more the merrier."
