A TOOWOOMBA man allegedly beat and stabbed a fellow inmate during a "barbecue day" in prison.

Scott Geoffrey Maygar has been committed to stand trial for an alleged assault on Rodney Michael Cherry.

The incident took place in a secure unit of the Maryborough Correctional Centre, on July 6, 2008.

Maygar faces a number of charges including attempted murder, assault occasioning bodily harm and grievous bodily harm.

The complainant told the court he believed he had upset Maygar when he told him off for the way he had spoken to prison officers.

He was allegedly assaulted "without warning" while he was buttering bread rolls.
