Singer Toni Childs to lead yoga session in Gladstone
YOGA is about to get lively in Gladstone with international singer Toni Childs coming to town.
But you won't be seeing her on stage, under bright lights and holding a microphone.
Instead, the singer will be using her voice to give Gladstone a spiritual experience through yoga.
On Monday, Ms Childs will host a 90-minute session bringing a new sound to the ancient form of exercise.
Despite popular perception, yoga is about more than being unbelievably bendy and building physical strength.
In Asia the ancient practice dates back thousands of years with evidence of its practice found on artefacts from 3000BC.
It's known as a 'spiritual discipline' and the session with Ms Childs is billed as being a celebration of life, combining movement, yoga, meditation and live singing.
Gladstone is just one stop in Ms Childs' adventure around Queensland in coming weeks, and she's hoping to give people an experience that leaves them more in touch with themselves.
"Each of us are beautiful, dynamic beings that are crying out to experience more self-love, self-appreciation, and self-care," Ms Childs said.
She said the event was the ultimate experience for every yoga lover and one way to "blast the doors off the hinges to our personal cages of limitation, and engage in deepening our relationship with ourselves".
"If you love yoga, new ideas, and powerful world music acts, prepare to be inspired."
Since the 1990s yoga has become a multimillion dollar business growing rapidly in popularity.
For Ms Childs the fascination came before the boom.
She has been practising yoga on and off for more than 30 years using it to help mentally cope with health issues that rocked her life in the late 1990s.
When it comes to what Gladstone yoga lovers can expect from this one-off session event, organisers have been tight-lipped, hoping not to spoil the surprise.
Gladstone Community Power Yoga's Paul Charalambous is co-ordinating the session and while it will be a first for him too, his friends on the Gold Coast who have already had their turn said it was "powerful".
"From what I have heard it should be a fantastic and really deep, moving experience," Mr Charalambous said.
"Toni is so connected to her creative side.
"Having someone like that come and teach from a deep place of creativity and from the heart, even to be in the same room, and experience that up close and personal will be quite uplifting, I imagine."
