Times Gone By: Tourists visit North West Island

1911: Mr W Hodge, with his two launches, Lyola and Cooloola, arrived yesterday afternoon with the first of a party of tourists who have been holidaying on North West Island.

The party which returned yesterday numbered 40 and the launches left again this morning to bring in the balance of the party.

Much time was spent in fishing and securing marine specimens.

The evenings were spent in dancing and concerts.

This party was well organised and in addition to other forms of entertainment, took a piano out to the island.

The party is eagerly looking forward to their next vacation to make a further visit.

1949: The death occurred at the Gladstone District Hospital of John Henry Fry who was born in Gladstone 69 years ago.

He spent practically the whole of his life in the district, and took a keen interest in its development.

He married Rachael Abigail Rice, and there was one child of the marriage, a son, who predeceased him 30 years ago.

Mr Fry had been employed by the Gladstone Town Council for many years, and at the time of his death was an employee of Swifts Pty Ltd. He was a prominent member of MUIOOF and an ardent worker for the Methodist Church.

He is survived by his widow, two brothers, Charles and Arthur, two sisters, Priscilla (Mrs Bauer, Yangan), Fanny (Mrs WR Golding).

Four sisters, Bessie, Nellie, Sarah and Maggie predeceased him.
