TIMES GONE BY: Memorable dance held at Calliope

1959: The launching of Gladstone's Home Nursing Service, scheduled for January 5 as the first Centenary Year project, has been delayed.

Owing to the Christmas and New Year holidays, it has not been possible to get members of the committee together in order to iron out problems.

It is confidently expected that the scheme will be launched in the near future.

Calliope CWA turned on one of the best dances of the season on New Year's Eve at Calliope. The main attractions were the Belle of the Ball and Matron of the Ball competition.

About a dozen charming young ladies entered for the Belle of the Ball and after much deliberation by the judges, the prize was awarded to Miss Janice Wright.

The Matrons were more on the modest side, and only five could be induced to face the judges. Mrs K Hickson of Calliope was the winner.

Good music was supplied by Michel's orchestra and several novelty dances added to the fun of the evening.

Mr WG Day acted as MC in his usual capable manner.

Gladstone's seaside resort of South End was a gay spot on New Year's Eve.

The occasion was a social and dance held in the new shelter shed recently erected by the Gladstone Town Council.

Dancing and community singing were enjoyed by everyone, likewise a well-arranged supper, and on the stroke of 12 o'clock, Mr Les Chrecee, President of South End Progress Association, wished all present and absent friends a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.
