Women’s softball teams tie
TABLE-toppers Taipans and cellar dwellers Steelers showed just how close the Gladstone Women’s Softball competition was with their 1-all draw.
“It was like a grand final,” Taipans spokeswoman Marian Boyd said. “It was just a really tight, good game.
“The pitches were on, the fielders were on – there were a couple of exceptional catches taken,” she said.
“Both sides just played over and above themselves,” Boyd said.
“It’s a good sign leading into the play-offs.”
Steelers coach Nigel Jones agreed the “pitching duel” was quite the spectacle.
“They were dominant performances by both pitchers,” he said.
A series of forfeits earlier in the season left Steelers in fifth position but Jones was still optimistic about their finals hopes.
Jones said the team was short three of their top hitters on Saturday and was confident the team could “get the chocolate” when they are expected to return next week.
“We have to win the next three games to have a shot at the finals,” Jones said.
Magpies had a bye and a Saints forfeit meant Telfords didn’t even have to do up their shoe laces to pick up some points.
