EDITORIAL: Three. Little. Words.

FUNNY how so many things in life can come down to three little words.

Maybe not the ones you're thinking of right now - but alas, we are waiting to feel the love.

Final. Investment. Decision; or FID in project jargon. All the court cases. All the approvals. All the international negotiations. All the to and the fro and the ifs, the buts, and the maybes. It all comes down to that one final decision.

Ask any community that has been through it, and as secure as a project might be, nothing is in the bag until the final investment decision is made and the contracts are all signed, sealed and delivered. But for the communities around Bowen, Collinsville and the upper Whitsundays, this has been a more protracted and painful process than most. And still there are no assurances.

Right from the start the Carmichael Mine proposition has been controversial. Of course. It's just how it is.

But how much money has already been spent - by all parties involved - in just getting to this stage? And we are still nowhere near done.

This is money which could have been redirected; spent making sure stringent regulations and conditions were adhered to, preparing the surrounding communities for job and contract readiness, and getting major associated projects across the line.

Of course, no one is suggesting due diligence or the proper checks and balances be overlooked. But it's time to get on with it. It's time this region knows, one way or another, whether this project is going ahead - and in turn, know where our jobs might be coming from.
