Three Chanel College girls make Qld team for school hockey

THREE Chanel College students have been selected to represent Queensland in the under-16 hockey team at the upcoming nationals in Tasmania following the Queensland Secondary School Championships.

Hannah Lowry, 15, Lindsay Mathison, 15, and Morgan Mathison, 13, starred in the Capricornia team at the school championships in Townsville.

Hannah and Lindsay's strength is defence, while Morgan excels in the midfield.

"I wasn't really expecting it," Hannah said of the selection.

Excited at the prospect of representing Queensland, the players' ideal goal will be to make the national team, but said it depends how they perform.

The Gladstone girls will go away to Brisbane to train with the rest of the team two days prior to the National Championships.

All three girls also play hockey within the Gladstone Association, with both Mathisons playing for the Meteors Hockey Club and Lowry playing for the Sparks Hockey Club.

They said they enjoyed the social aspect of the sport.

On top of their usual club training, the girls join fellow Gladstone players who have made it into the Queensland team to take part in extra representative training.

Another upcoming event for the talented players, is the under-13 and under-15 Gladstone representative trials, which the girls will be working towards as well.

The girls said they were thankful to their parents and various coaches.
