Family one step closer to the truth behind son's death

THIS is the closest Michael and Lee Garrels have ever felt to knowing the truth behind their son Jason's death.

Yesterday Coroner David O'Connell handed down his findings after a five-day inquest over the fatal electrocution had been held in March this year.

Mr Garrels had been fighting for what he describes as "justice for Jason" since his son's life ended on February 27 in 2012.

He was particularly angry over the evidence that an experienced WHS inspector didn't know he had the authority to shut down power to a site.

The safety inspector, who attended the site on February 14, had issued both improvement notices and electrical safety notices marked "highest level of concern".

Mr Garrels was also angry that Mr Day had been allowed to continue working at the residential development where, the inquest was told, he made more safety breaches the same as what led to Jason's death.

However, he said these finding brought his family "one step towards what we're hoping to achieve".

"This is the closest we've got to a truthful outcome."

While handing down his findings, Mr O'Connell made special mention of Mrs Garrels.

As a registered nurse, she had gone to help after hearing a young man had been electrocuted only to find it was her son.

Mr O'Connell said she displayed "thorough professionalism" and remained in presence of mind to conduct the handover from the ambulance officers.

"For this she has my admiration," Mr O'Connell said.
