No more scares as favourite ghost haunt closes

THE ghostly apparitions are gone. The spiders have spun their last webs. And Freddy Krueger and Dracula have decamped.

The city's favourite ghostly haunt has closed.

For 20 years David and Annette McDonnell have tricked and treated the city's residents by opening their haunted house to the public.

Mr McDonnell said 900 people, aged from four months to 80, would go through his house each year.

"I started doing it for my daughter and her class of 20," he said.

"It was a couple of rooms then; by the end it grew into 12 rooms and two marquees in the front yard."

Mr McDonnell said there was a scene from every horror film including a cemetery, Freddy Krueger and Dracula.

"The haunted house was downstairs and we kept upstairs private for us," he said.

"It was our little thing for the community."

Neighbour Debbie Reardon said the ghostly apparitions would be missed.

"It's an icon all throughout Gladstone. People would line up all the way down the street," she said.

"To open your house up for the whole region is truly incredible."

Last Saturday the people of Whitewood Cres dressed up one last time to say thanks.

Mr McDonnell has taken the decorations to Bundaberg and has haunting plans for his new home.
