Thief on miners wage but stole a safe, $400 of fuel, jewels

HE MAY have been earning more than $1700 a week, but that didn't stop a Rockhampton miner from repeatedly stealing fuel.

Ryan Douglas Drochmann, 20, pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court earlier this week to five charges of stealing, one count of burglary and one count of failing to surrender into custody.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Darrell Dalton said Drochmann stole a total of more than $400 worth of fuel from the Mobil Service Station on George St in September last year.

He also stole $93.53 worth from the BP station on Yaamba Rd in October.

Sgt Dalton told the court the defendant was also a party to a burglary of his mate's dad's house.

The court heard Drochmann kept a look out while two other males entered the Ridgelands house and stole a safe containing passports, jewellery and other personal items. The house was being renovated at the time and was not properly secured.

The safe weighed about 200kg and was dragged through the house.

The three men used a grinder to open the safe and then dumped it in a river. About $13,000 in damage was caused to the house.

Duty solicitor Lance Rundle said his client was a contract sandblaster. He asked the magistrate to take into account the fact Drochmann had spent two nights in custody.

Drochmann was fined $1400 and ordered to pay restitution. He was also sentenced to four months jail suspended for 18 months and given 18 months probation.
