Foxy Ladies lead the way at Gold Coast surf lifesaving meet
TANNUM Sands Foxy Ladies may not have won, or even been the best performer from the club on the Gold Coast last weekend, but the crew was certainly the highlight of the five Tannum attendees.
In their first ever competition, the Foxy Ladies were simply looking to make it out around the marker and back to the beach in a safe manner.
In reality, the expectation of the crew was set to low, hindsight showing they were much stronger than initially thought.
The Open Women's team made the final, finishing fourth on Southport Beach, Gold Coast, in round three of the Navy Australian Surf Rowers League Queensland.
"They shocked and surprised themselves and everyone," club sweep Phil Massingham said.
"They just went down to go out and back."
The excitement back on the beach was enormous, between the elation of the Foxy Ladies and the congratulations of the other Tannum Sands crews, but the team is not getting ahead of themselves.
"They were over the moon, two of them only got their Bronze last week," Massingham said.
"It was a nice surprise, but it is back to work again now."
On top of the Foxy Ladies, Tannum's entrants all gained a top four place at Southport.
Five out of five teams in the finals, and three top three results, Massingham was happy with the final meet of the year.
"The numbers were right down, maybe because of things around Christmas," he said.
"It was a great meet and we are very happy."
The Under-19 Men's team, the Trojans, blitzed the field in their competition, while the Sweet Cheeks and Gorlocks were almost victors in the Under-23 categories too.
