Cup half full as Twba coffee shop expands to university

FOR many university students, The Hub will simply be the place to get their caffeine hit before classes.

But owner David Burrett knows just how much else the social enterprise café can achieve.

The Hub at the University of Southern Queensland is the latest venture of Bounce, the Ruthven St coffee shop employing people with a disability or re-entering the workforce.

Mr Burrett said the Toowoomba community had embraced the idea behind Bounce.

"Once we saw the response to the first one, we wanted to expand to provide more opportunities to people."

He said he hoped that once people had a couple of coffees they would realise what the enterprise was all about.

"It removes the stigma and prejudice that some people can face in our community," he said.

Mr Burrett said that with 14 staff now working across the two cafes, he could see the difference being made in the lives of people who may otherwise struggle to enter the workforce.

"The biggest hurdle is confidence and self-belief.

"So we spend a lot of time one-on-one to make sure they're getting it right, and not throwing them in at the deep end.
