Readers react: Slow economy forces restaurant to shut
MACKAY'S Eastern Port Yum Cha and Seafood Restaurant at Caneland Central will close.
The Asian-style dining experience will close its doors in October, Eastern Port Yum Cha and Seafood Restaurant manager Samson Wang said.
He said the decision was made to not renew their lease due to the "terrible" economic conditions.
The Eastern Port Yum Cha Restaurant first opened in 2011, with great success seen during the boom.
The restaurant used to be "booked well in advance".
Tables are barely filled these days, he said.
"It was so busy, we would have to run here and run there to take everyone's orders," Mr Wang said.
"We had about 30 staff in total at the front and back of house, but now we only have about nine or 10.
"Last year for us was really slow and we weren't making much and now this year has been terrible. We've made no money."
The owner was unavailable for comment.
Amanda Dawson Maybe rather than shutting all together y not just down size into a smaller shop/eatery provide home delivery as alot of people do love this place smaller shop smaller rents
James Dingwall We love this restaurant so much and Samson is always so friendly and welcoming. We will definitely miss
Pia Strange Its lovely food but to expensive i believe for the average person to dine there. Perhaps downsizing the restaurant and lowering prices may help them.
Sad to hear this.
Cath Uit Den Bogaard Sad to see them go. Mackay really needs an economic injection.
Steve Brayshaw Almost 11 shops are shutting at Canelands
Carole Henry So very sorry to hear this. High rents and overheads and no assistance from the governments (business incentives) makes running a small business in a small town difficult as many of us can attest. I hope you are not discouraged and will try in brisbane, Gold Coast, Melb Sydney etc where the clientele base is strong. All the best to u all.
Andrea Mobbs After paying for insurance, rego, health fund, RATES etc, people really have no spending money left to support businesses. And certain people getting pay rises that don't need it!!
Beck Berger Sad to see them go. This is happening all to often now.
Rebecca Gilpin Sad to see it go, lovely people and great food
