Ten jobs affected as BMA closes Barney Point coal lab

The BHP Mitsubishi Alliance has closed its coal testing laboratory at the Barney Point Coal Terminal in Gladstone, affecting 10 employees.

It told staff this morning the lab would be closed on March 7 "due to a decline in the service requirements".

It also said the closure was part of a renewed focus on costs and efficiency across the business.

BMA said it would work to re-locate the workers to other areas of its business.

Barney Point Coal Terminal is owned and managed by Gladstone Ports Corporation.

The Gladstone Ports Corporation said in response to the news that the layoffs would have no effect on the operations of the port.
