Telstra bombshell rings in changes for call centre jobs

TELSTRA'S chief executive has put a five-year time limit on thousands of Australian-based call centre jobs, saying online services are the way of the future.

David Thodey dropped the bombshell just over a week after Telstra wowed investors with a $4.3 billion full-year profit.

Mr Thodey told 774 ABC Melbourne radio host Jon Faine he does not brush off criticism levelled at Telstra for sending jobs offshore, but the company cannot ignore change.

"In the reality these jobs will not exist in five years," he said.

"You think about how you interact with a bank today. You don't go into the bank branch that often and that's going to be the truth, I think, about many of the traditional service-related jobs.

"It's going to be more and more digitally done and I think as difficult as that is to face, we have to ... the off-shoring is a temporary sort of step."

The Community and Public Sector Union estimates that Telstra has cut 2500 Australian-based call centre jobs in the past two years alone.
