Telfords triumph in decider
Trailing 2-1 to Psyclones at the bottom of the seventh in the women’s A-grade softball grand final, Telfords’ lead off hitter Jill Shulke stepped up to the plate.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Psyclones could only watch on in horror as Shulke launched a fly ball to centre field allowing two Telfords teammates on base to scamper home and snatch a climactic 3-2 premiership victory at the death.
Telfords coach Darin Dittman said his winning resolve never wavered despite heading into the final innings with plenty of work to do.
“To get home in the last dig is as good as it gets,” he said.
“We left it to the last minute; I would have liked it maybe an innings earlier but it was definitely a good win and a good grand final.
“She (Rebecca Watson) is a very good pitcher but she does tire at the end so I knew if we were a couple of runs away in the last couple of digs we’d probably get home.”
Psyclones looked in complete control at 2-0 heading into the fifth, but a lapse in concentration allowed Telfords to steal home base and a sniff of victory at 2-1.
Rebecca Watson found herself on base for Psyclones at the top of the seventh after a scoreless sixth, but a shrewd double play from Telfords set up a grandstand finish.
With no outs and two runners on base, Telfords made their move at the last to show their late season run was no fluke.
Having beaten competition favourite Souths in the major semi final two weeks prior, the premiership was the icing on the cake for the fast finishing Telfords.
“We’ve probably been the form team in the last few games; we’ve played well enough to win a grand final it was just a matter of doing it on the day,” Dittman said.
“Today was about showing up and doing the stuff we’ve done in the last four or five games.”
The B-grade grand final saw Crocs run out 29-7 in a one sided affair against Black Cats.
