Teenager faked transactions to pay bills

A TEENAGER working at a clothing store helped herself to more than $2000 in company profits.

Brittney Monique-Joan Manttan was employed at Tarocash in Caneland Central.

Over about a two-month period between August 31 and November 2, she performed 14 false transactions for a total of $2879.71.

Prosecutor James Grehan said Manttan then refunded the money on to two of her personal bank cards.

When the matter came to the attention of her employer, Manttan was confronted. She attended performance counselling and signed a hand-written confession, Mr Grehan said. She also co-operated fully with police, Mackay Magistrates Court was told.

Manttan pleaded guilty to fraud by an employee.

Legal Aid Queensland duty solicitor Kristy Doyle said Manttan, 19, had entered an early plea. She had been employed at the store since June last year and was working about 15 to 20 hours each week and earning about $200, the court was told.

Ms Doyle said Manttan had been going through a difficult time. Her family unit had been struggling financially and she had been trying to help pay the bills.

Magistrate Ross Risson said it was "extremely foolish" to take money that didn't belong to her to help with a difficult financial situation.

She was placed on 12 months probation and ordered to pay back the money. No conviction was recorded.
