COWABUNGA dude. Nickelodeon is reviving the beloved '80s cartoon series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The original comic book series, and its animated TV show and movie spin-offs, helped to popularize surfer-inspired catchphrases including "gnarly", "bodacious" and "tubular".

The new incarnation of the Turtles debuts in a one-hour special on Nickelodeon on October 8.

Playing the voices of the turtles in a half shell are American Pie star Jason Biggs, Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin, Planet Sheen star Rob Paulsen and Ben 10 star Greg Cipes.

Cipes, who has also voiced characters in the animated children's series Teen Titans and Ultimate Spider-Man, plays fun-loving, nunchuck-wielding Michelangelo.

"He's the personification of looseness, freedom, play, fun, all of those things," he said.

"He was my favourite character growing up and now I get to be him."

He credits the original TV show with inspiring him to take up martial arts as a child.

"The series in the '80s raised me. I spent hundreds of hours in front of the TV with the Turtles," he said.

"It inspired me to have my first meditation session - I remember seeing an episode where Splinter was teaching the turtles to meditate - and that's how I started a martial arts career."

He said the core cast made an effort to record their voices together in the same studio.

"We have so much fun," Cipes said.

"It has so much to do with the chemistry of all of us.

"We have to be together. It's hard to get through the sessions sometimes because we're having such a good time.

"Jason is the funniest man I ever met. He just cracks me up.

"They sit him next to me, so you can imagine how hard it is to keep a straight face.

"As the show continues to be made, the writers are writing it more for him and his sense of humour."
