Teen to face trial charged with raping 80-year-old

TEENAGER Jacob James Passman will stand trial in the District Court in Mackay for the rape of an elderly woman.

The 18-year-old appeared in the Mackay Magistrates Court yesterday morning via video link for the committal hand-up.

Passman is accused of one count of rape against an 80-year-old woman at Slade Point on May 12 this year.

Prosecutor Sheena Hayes tendered 18 statements and two addendum statements to Magistrates Ross Risson.

She said the exhibits would be handed straight to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Legal Aid Queensland defence solicitor Kristy Doyle told the court she was instructed to consent to a prima facie case.

This means it will be committed to the higher court without the evidence being formally considered.

When Mr Risson asked Passman if he wished to enter a plea he said, "I wish to enter no plea yet" over the video link.

Ms Doyle did no make a bail application for Passman, who was denied bail by Magistrate Damien Dwyer in May this year.

The matter has been committed to the higher court for a date to be set.
