Teen takes $20 car for a spin, gets $1200 fine

A TEENAGER who purchased a car for just $20 told police he just wanted to go for a drive when he took it for a spin while unlicensed.

Jacob Wade Garner, 18, pleaded guilty to unlicensed driving, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving an uninsured vehicle.

The court heard Garner was stopped by police on Ibis Blvd, Eli Waters about 2.30pm on March 1.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Allison said the car had its registration cancelled in July last year and Garner admitted to police he did not have a licence.

"He said he had paid $20 for the vehicle and wanted to drive it for fun," he said.

Sgt Allison said the car had been seen driving out of the Harvey Norman car park before it was spotted on Ibis Blvd.

Garner, who represented himself in court, declined to give any reason for taking the car for a spin.

Magistrate Graham Hillan accepted Garner's pleas of guilty for the three offences.

He fined Garner $1200 and disqualified him for holding a licence for six months.

Mr Hillan warned Garner he would not be able to apply for a licence until after he had completed the disqualification period.

The fines were referred to the State Enforcement Penalties Registry.
