Teen dies after legs severed by train during 18th birthday

A TEENAGER whose legs were severed by a train on the New South Wales mid-north coast while celebrating his 18th birthday has died in hospital.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports each leg was lost above the knee when he was struck by a freight train in Taree on December 21.

Police have told SMH the teen died on Boxing Day.

Taree Mayor Paul Hogan said he only learned of the teenager's death on Tuesday

"The death of the young lad is very sad, very upsetting," he told SMH.

Police are investigating how the teenager ended up on the train tracks at 4.30am.

They are also looking at why a group of people at the scene threw rocks at police, emergency services and even the train driver as they attempted the help the injured man.
