Teachers to strike over wage offer

STATE school teachers have voted to walk off the job next month in another public display of defiance against the State Government.

In what looks to be another in a succession of protests in recent months, state school teachers from across Queensland are poised to strike on Tuesday, October 16.

An Electoral Commission of Queensland ballot of teachers and principals resulted in more than 90% in favour of work bans and limitations and 84% in favour of 24-hour stop-work action.

Teachers are unhappy with a State Government 2.7% wage rise offer, which is tied to the removal of 20 working conditions.

QTU president Kevin Bates said some of the conditions related to class size protections, the transfer teacher scheme and school-based decision-making.

Mr Bates said teaching conditions equalled learning conditions, which teachers were not prepared to sell off.

"Teachers are fired up and they are angry," he said.

Asked whether he thought their strike action would have an impact considering the spate of recent protests and minimal government response, Mr Bates said industrial action was a sad reality of enterprise bargaining negotiations.

"It's like it's part of the strategy that is the enterprise bargaining negotiations chess game," he said.

"The government always says it is irrelevant and not going to change anything.

"But our members know from experience the only time the government changes its position is when they are forced to take industrial action."

Negotiations between the State Government and the QTU are ongoing.
