Tax office clarifies what Bechtel workers can claim
THE Australian Taxation Office has generated a fact sheet specifically for Bechtel workers on Curtis Island, outlining what they can and can't claim.
The information sheets were sent out this week reminding workers that claims for tools, travel and meals couldn't necessarily all be claimed.
Bechtel pays some workers a tool allowance which actually shows up on their payment summary - forwarded to the tax office - and provides all meals to FIFO employees.
The Observer understands some workers will be asked to pay back up to $10,000.
The ATO has confirmed it will giving workers a chance to escape fines and penalties, including for previous years, if they amend their tax returns before October 31.
The fact sheet also outlines rules around mobile phones, accommodation expenses, productivity allowances and training courses.
Each point covers claims Bechtel provides to employees.
