Gladstone tastebuds keen to welcome two new businesses

FOOD options are expanding in Gladstone and surrounds, with two new eateries opening for business on Saturday.

McDonald's Calliope Travel Centre impressed its first customers and Yogurtland proved popular, judging by the long lines and crowded store.

Tony Ward is now the franchisee of three of the four McDonalds stories in the region, including Kin Kora and the City restaurants.

The new highway McDonald's, which neighbours a Puma service station, has between 90-100 employees.

Mr Ward said this restaurant was significant to him in a different way to his other franchises.

"This is the first store I have actually opened," he said. "I feel a bit more involved. I have been able to put my own touches on it and incorporate my own culture."

He said he looked forward to serving the Calliope community.

"We do welcome the locals at Calliope. We don't want to just be seen as a highway store," Mr Ward said.

"We want travellers, truckies and locals to all have a good experience."

Yogurtland also celebrated its opening on Saturday, creating hype at Stockland Gladstone.

The 17th Yogurtland in Australia offered free yoghurt from 1-10pm, and the rain did not keep Gladstonites away.

Store manager Amanda Horkings and store owner Theo Koutrodimos were impressed by the turnout.

"Yogurtland is fantastic for Gladdy because there is nothing else like it," Ms Horkings said.

Mr Koutrodimos added: "Gladstone has come out in droves today."

The self-service store offers up to 18 flavours.

"Cookies and cream, peanut butter and vanilla are our popular flavours at the moment," Mr Koutrodimos said.

There is in total 60 different flavours, which are rotated every fortnight, but customers can be assured the favourites usually stick around.

OTHER NEW PLACES:

  • Ribs and Rumps and The Coffee Club - located at The Grand Hotel.
  • Spinnaker Cafe - located on Alf O'Rourke Dr, at Spinnaker Park.
  • Yogurtland - Stockland Gladstone at the east end mall extension.

STILL TO COME:

  • Hogs Breath on Goondoon St.
  • The Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre cafe.
