Tannum rewarded with nine chosen for Gladstone Raiders

RUGBY LEAGUE: Tannum's early season performances have been recognised with nine of its players chosen in the Gladstone Raiders squad for the upcoming 47th Battalion carnival.

Brothers and Valleys both have seven players each in the 23-man squad, which will play at Toowoomba on the weekend of May 5-6.

It's a deserved reward for the Seagulls who are the only Gladstone side with two wins so far this season.

Tannum coach Craig Karakyriacos said having his players recognised for their early-season efforts was encouraging.

"They're the boys who are really digging deep and holding their own," he said.

"They've really set a platform for our team this year which is good especially from a coaches' point of view."

Tannum lost its Round 5 match 30-20 against Biloela last weekend, but were in the lead inside the final 10 minutes until the Panthers scored two late tries.

"Our losses have been in the dying stages too and that's the worst part where the opposition has just nabbed us on the line but we're slowly getting there," Karakyriacos said.

"Hopefully we can win a few more at the back end of the season in order to be competitive with the top four or five."

Tannum will face the undefeated Yeppoon Swans at Marley Brown Oval on Saturday night, offering Karakyriacos' side a true test of its character.

"It's going to be a big call for us and another big boundary setter to see where we are sitting," he said.

"After watching the Brothers game (a 70-6 loss in Round 2) - Brothers were clinical and we were just one per cent behind them on everything we did - but we still dug deep for the 80minutes of football.

"Everyone's body language was up and in every game we've lost our body language has been up right at the end.

"Last week we absorbed a lot of defence on us and that body language was up. That's one good thing with this young crew... They are really digging deep for each other."
