Tannum nippers tackle CQ Capras' big boys

PETER Gallen is used to throwing his body around the rugby league field, making tackles and hard yards on the grass field.

Instead of the grass, Gallen was on Sunday with his Central Queensland Capras squad members who gathered at Tannum Sands beach.

Challenging the Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club's nippers in a few runs of beach flags, Gallen was just as motivated as he would be taking on the best in rugby league.

"I love when we get all the kids involved, especially with Central Queensland rugby league being such a big region," Gallen said.

"It makes us feel awesome even when they don't know who you are."

One of the nippers who was on deck to show the Capras how it was done was Braith Young.

The nine-year-old raced across the sand to beat all of the rugby league players.

He loved the experience so much, he thinks they should come along more often.

"They should come around more often ... I might go for them now," Braith said.

Another nipper who was happy to see the Capras around was Lily McClure, who had a running tussle with forward Tyson White.

Going head to head for flags a number of times, Lily, 9, was on top more than she lost the fight.

"I am good at flags, I always come first," she said. "I would love to do it again."

White was happy to be taking on the kids as well, as it meant the finish of the hard work in beach running and swimming, as well as making some new fans.

"It is always good to get more fans ... this was good fun," he said.
