Luggers look to claim a Qld berth this weekend

WITH two teams already selected to represent Queensland at the Australian Surf Boat Titles, Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club is pushing for a third crew to fly the state flag.

A small club, compared to most of the challengers across Queensland, Tannum Sands could very well find itself with half of the state representation.,

Six teams are selected to represent the state in the open men, open women, men's U23, women's U23, men's U19 and women's U19.

Tannum Sands Trojans and Tannum Sands Sweet Cheeks crews have cemented spots in the Men's U19 and Women's U23 divisions respectively, it is now the Men's U23 team - the Luggers - who could add to the list.

"They won their first round in the Navy Australian Surf Rowers League and have done three carnivals for two wins and a second," sweep Phil Massingham said.

"They have been together for a couple of years, this is a great achievement."

Attending the Navy series final round this Saturday at Tugun on the Gold Coast was not originally on the list of events for the Luggers, but the opportunity to confirm a position for Queensland was too much to resist.

"I will be honest, Saturday should decide the Queensland State team," Massingham said.

"If they win the race, I have been told they will make it. As far as I can see it is between the boys and Kurrawa."

While the Gold Coast is the main aim for the weekend, the Luggers will make a quick departure from Tugun, and head for a competition on Sunday in New South Wales.
