Suzuki taking a bite of high-tech with Apple CarPlay

IMPROVED technology is expected to deliver a fruitful year for Suzuki.

The new Vitara compact SUV will arrive in September armed with new Apple CarPlay functionality.

Suzuki Queensland, which distributes vehicles across the Sunshine State and northern NSW, has high expectations for the new offerings scheduled to be released in September.

Shorter, but lighter, wider and taller than its S-Cross stablemate, the pair will also share drivetrain and transmission.

The Vitara will also come out of the same factory in Hungary.

"We are pretty excited. It has some pretty tidy styling cues," Suzuki Queensland general manager Adam Le Fevre said.

"One of the advantages is that it will have the Apple media system, whilst it carries the name of Apple it is also supported by Android."

The Apple CarPlay integrates your apps with the car's digital systems, allowing users to control them more easily.

Essentially it mirrors the functionality of your iPhone without having to take your eyes off the road.

"The research we've got is that the consumer expects that a car should have all the safety features, it should have the economy, it should have the styling, and for many of the younger buyers what sets a car apart is its technical advantage," Mr Le Fevre said.

"We believe the system that will come in the majority of models in the Vitara will be a hit."

Another new offering was originally scheduled to come from Suzuki month, with the Celerio to replace the Alto light car. But a brakes issue has forced its release to be delayed.

The Celerio's brakes wouldn't work at more than 100kmh during a test at Millbrook Proving Ground. The driver managed to stop the vehicle using the handbrake.

When released, much of the marketing activity is forecast to come from the brand's national distributor, Suzuki Australia, with the Queensland business not setting lofty sales targets.

While the Alto has been hailed as one of the nation's cheapest cars to run annual motoring club surveys, the Celerio (pictured left) is expected to be more expensive than the Alto - which will be a tough ask up against the likes of Mitsubishi's segment Mirage and the cute retro Fiat 500.

"The volume numbers for our state and market will be in line with Alto, keeping in mind that segment is off considerably," Mr Le Fevre said.
