Syringe bandit a figment of alleged victim's imagination

UPDATE THURSDAY: A syringe-wielding bandit who stole a car was a figment of the alleged victim's imagination.

On Thursday Gladstone Detective Senior Sergeant Luke Peachey said the armed robbery, which was supposed to have happened late on Tuesday night, did not occur.

The hire car at the centre of the alleged false complaint is still missing.

It was reported that a car travelling south on the Bruce Hwy stopped to assist a man who flagged the driver, forced the male out of the car and proceeded to steal the car.

Police are still looking for the car.

EARLIER: A syringe-wielding bandit stole a man's car as he was driving south on the Bruce Hwy at Miriam Vale.

The armed robber hailed down a hire car just before 11pm on Tuesday.

He threatened the driver with a syringe before stealing the man's car.

The victim walked to a nearby police station where he reported the attack.
