Swimmers speed up to wind down
THE looming end of the Central Queensland swimming season did not dampen spirits at the CQ Championships on the weekend.
The competition held at the Gladstone Aquatic Centre was the last inter-club meet for the 2009-10 season – with the exception of national titles – so swimmers were keen to show off what they had learned during the summer months.
Gladstone Gladiators’ club secretary and event organiser Susan Brown said the weekend went off without a hitch and a number of CQ records had been broken.
Caribeae and Rockhampton City claimed top honours in the combined team scores, finishing first and second respectively.
Gladstone Gladiators came in third followed by Western Suburbs.
Gladiators young gun Alex Williams again showed impressive form in the water when he picked up the best performance award for his CQ record-breaking swim in the 50m backstroke alongside a host of other placings.
Competitors who qualified for nationals would continue to train for the event held over Easter weekend.
