Suspicious blaze destroys Western Downs home

POLICE are investigating after an abandoned house on the Western Downs was destroyed by fire overnight.

The house was well alight when emergency services were called to the structure near the corner of Short and Inverai Rds at Chinchilla about 11.30pm.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services battled the blaze and brought it under control by 11.45pm, stopping the spread to other properties and confining the fire to small flames.

Crews remained on scene dampening down hot spots and flare-ups at 1.15am.

Chinchilla police and fire investigators will return to the house today to attempt to determine the cause.

A Queensland Police spokesman said the fire was being treated as suspicious at this stage.

"The dwelling has been vacant for some time and there were no occupants in the house at the time," he said.

"Police are treating it as suspicious.

"The fire  caused significant internal and structural damage to the building."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
