Suspended sentence for mum who attacked her own kids

MAGISTRATE Russell Warfield has told a mother if her two young children had still been in her care, he would have called the Department of Child Safety himself.

A 31-year-old woman pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault yesterday in Gladstone Magistrates Court.

Police prosecutor Sean Franklin said police had been called to her Barney Point home at 9pm on September 25.

He said the children, aged eight and five, were found "cowering under a blanket" in the master bedroom.

The kids told the police their mum had been drinking all day and was upset because she couldn't find the house keys.

Sergeant Franklin said the defendant grabbed one child by the collar, scratching the child's chest.

She put the other in a headlock before smacking the child in the face.

The woman was sentenced to four months in prison, which was wholly suspended.
