ROBERT Withers never thought he would even be at the Queensland Champion of Champions tournament, let alone nearly make the final.

In the end, it was only a matter of ends which relegated the Calliope Central Bowls Club player to third in the state.

After winning his first two matches in Toombul, Withers went down to Andrew Waddell 25-20.

"It was just a couple of ends, it was late in the day and the green changed and he got the upper hand," Withers said.

"We were even on the 18th end. I am very proud of my performance."

Withers pushed his state-level opponent right to the edge and evidently took everything out of Waddell, who went on to lose the final comprehensively.

With a lot of his Calliope club mates on hand to watch the Queensland Champion of Champions, Withers has set his sights on making the tournament again in the coming years.

"I certainly want to do it again," he said.

"You can play better bowls when you are playing that quality of opponent.

"It was a tough competition and I loved watching the other matches while we were there."

Withers' results:

Round 1- Defeated Paul Warren 25-14

Round 2 - Defeated Tony O'Connor 25-17

Round 3 - Lost to Andrew Waddell 25-20
